Strict policy on dating

Colleges have varying policies on faculty dating their students. Among the faculty, there’s a strong shared understanding that dating a current student is just plain wrong. And yet there’s a problem: some faculty are willing to cross that line. In this strip the academic mice show how flexible an anti-dating policy can be.

As Bad as Hitler

Modern-day evils can’t match those of Adolf Hitler, but all too often on a college campus somebody makes the comparison. Here, one of our academic mice likens the campus police to Hitler because they enforce fire lane parking restrictions. The mouse thereby invites application of a form of Godwin’s Law: “The first side to bring up Hitler in a discussion loses.” (As originally formulated, Godwin’s law said only: “As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1.”)

Faculty react a lot of different ways: some scolding the students, others remembering their own student days. In this strip, the academic mice remember getting drunk and attacking cops in the 1960s.

So, can you guess which big-box store the academic mice are really taking a poke at? And — didn’t both of those academic mice have to be at the evil store for one to see the other getting a big TV set?

Good climate models

How do we know the predict the future of our climate? Why, with climate models, of course! But how good are the models? Don’t ask; the uncertainty is too great. Of course, some people will say the uncertainty calls for doing less on climate and others will claim the opposite. (I know which side is right, but I’m not telling.)
